IS IT POSSIBLE TO FORGET THE PAST

December 15.   1 Timothy Chi 3-5

IS IT POSSIBLE TO FORGET THE PAST?

[13] Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, [14] I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

‭‭Philippians‬ ‭3:13‭-‬14‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

GOOD DAY: Is it possible to forget the past, especially the ones that bruised us? The answer is straight YES AND NO. Forgetting is a choice you have to make but with a definite purpose. Let me reverse the order in dealing with the answer. NO because the experience is in your memory bank and may not be wiped off hard as you want to try. It becomes a root of a cut tree that starts sprouting again at the scent of water of a similar experience. Holding on to the pain, you get bitter and   stuck to the past. If you hold on to the pain, then you see every experience from the lens of that pain and you end up injuring yourself and becoming unproductive and unfulfilled.

YES because you have a choice of letting go of the venom and pain the experience caused you and moving on. Forgetting is not obliterating the incident but dealing with the pain, learning lessons and dropping the pain and moving on. The more purpose you have for your life, the easier it becomes to drop off the pain and move on to your greater goal. Every experience whether good or bad is part of your history so you cannot pretend it didn't happen but you can use it to your advantage. My classic example was when my son was called home years back. I was pained deeply and very angry, resentful, and doubtful of God and His word as He did not do what I prayed for. I felt betrayed by God and ashamed of myself and battled with guilt for not telling friends who could seek other means of praying outside what the Bible says. I tell you I cannot forget the experience. But then, I sat quietly and decided what I wanted to do with all my hurt and emotions. That will be in my book at a later date. I chose to make the best of my shattered life while still holding on to God. Today, I remember my experience with thanksgiving because I have learnt to operate at the higher me.

So, make your choice today of whether to forget or not to forget the past.

PRAY: Dear Lord, help me to use my pain to make life better for me and for others and for Your glory.
